Der australische Bariton Brett Carter studierte an der Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts und war anschließend Mitglied des Australian Opera Studio. Nach ersten Engagements in Australien, unter anderem bei Opera Queensland, führte ihn seine Laufbahn nach Deutschland, wo er zunächst am Hessischen Staatstheater Wiesbaden engagiert war.
Seit der Spielzeit 2014/15 gehört Brett Carter zum Ensemble des Staatstheater Mainz. Dort hat er sich über mehr als ein Jahrzehnt ein vielseitiges Repertoire erarbeitet, das zentrale Partien des lyrischen und Kavalierbaritonfachs ebenso umfasst wie zunehmend dramatische Rollen. Zu seinen wichtigen Partien zählen Rodrigo in Verdis Don Carlo, Graf Almaviva in Mozarts Le nozze di Figaro, Marcello in Puccinis La Bohème, Escamillo in Bizets Carmen, Valentin in Gounods Faust und Ford in Verdis Falstaff.
Seine künstlerische Bandbreite zeigt sich zugleich in einem besonderen Interesse für Werke des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts. In Mainz war er unter anderem in Viktor Ullmanns Der Kaiser von Atlantis sowie als Jan in Missy Mazzolis Breaking the Waves zu erleben und verbindet damit klassisches Kernrepertoire mit zeitgenössischen und stilistisch anspruchsvollen Partien.
Gastengagements führten ihn unter anderem an die Staatsoper Stuttgart, die Oper Frankfurt und das Nationaltheater Mannheim. Im Sommer 2026 gastierte er als Escamillo in Carmen bei den Heidelberger Schlossfestspielen.
In der Spielzeit 2025/26 war Brett Carter am Staatstheater Mainz unter anderem als Frank/Fritz in Korngolds Die tote Stadt, als Vater in Humperdincks Hänsel und Gretel, in einer Hauptpartie in Viktor Ullmanns Der Kaiser von Atlantis, als Jan in Missy Mazzolis Breaking the Waves sowie als Ford in Verdis Falstaff zu erleben.
Mit der Spielzeit 2026/27 setzt Brett Carter seine Entwicklung in das dramatische Baritonfach konsequent fort. Am Staatstheater Mainz gibt er sein Rollendebüt als Friedrich von Telramund in Wagners Lohengrin und übernimmt erneut die Titelpartie in Verdis Nabucco.
Auch international bleibt Brett Carter präsent: 2027 kehrt er für ein Engagement bei der West Australian Opera in Perth nach Australien zurück und ist dort als Escamillo in Bizets Carmen zu erleben.

Australian baritone Brett Carter studied at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts before becoming a member of the Australian Opera Studio. Following his first professional engagements in Australia, including with Opera Queensland, his career brought him to Germany, where he was initially engaged at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden.
Since the 2014/15 season, Brett Carter has been a member of the ensemble at Staatstheater Mainz. Over more than a decade with the company, he has developed a diverse repertoire encompassing major lyric and Kavalierbariton roles while increasingly moving into the dramatic baritone repertoire. His principal roles include Rodrigo in Verdi’s Don Carlo, Count Almaviva in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, Marcello in Puccini’s La Bohème, Escamillo in Bizet’s Carmen, Valentin in Gounod’s Faust, and Ford in Verdi’s Falstaff.
His artistic versatility is also reflected in a particular interest in works of the 20th and 21st centuries. In Mainz, he has appeared in Viktor Ullmann’s Der Kaiser von Atlantis and as Jan in Missy Mazzoli’s Breaking the Waves, combining the core operatic repertoire with contemporary and stylistically demanding roles.
Guest engagements have taken him to the Staatsoper Stuttgart, Oper Frankfurt and Nationaltheater Mannheim. In summer 2026, he appeared as Escamillo in Carmen at the Heidelberger Schlossfestspiele.

In the 2026/27 season, Brett Carter continues his development into the dramatic baritone repertoire. At Staatstheater Mainz, he makes his role debut as Friedrich von Telramund in Wagner’s Lohengrin and returns to the title role in Verdi’s Nabucco.
Carter also continues to perform internationally. In 2027, he returns to Australia for an engagement with West Australian Opera in Perth, appearing as Escamillo in Bizet’s Carmen.
